This week I talk with the one and only Michael O’Neal of the Solopreneur podcast about contrast, amongst other things. Mike is a funny down to earth dude and I’m honored that he joined us on the Positivity Effect.
Why he started the Solopreneur Hour podcast?
- Wanted to change up the typical business podcast format
- Found a need for a show with an open conversational format that’s entertaining
- Felt the casual feel would be best for the audience to absorb powerful tips from the guests
Benefit of having a positive outlook
- Changes you physically
- Default in our minds = compare up
- You’re more attractive physically when you have a positive attitude
- Many people’s default to establish rapport = complain about something
- Happiness = 10% what happens to you and 90% of how you respond to it
Understand the word contrast
- When something bad happens to you, it’s easy to compare up
- Example: “I don’t have as much money as Bob does”
- Focus on the things you do have
Mike shows us why Hurricane Katrina really put life in perspective for him
Mentorship
- Inspired by his good buddy John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneur on Fire
- Most of his influence comes from the comedy world
- Listens to Off Camera w/ Sam Jones & Here’s the thing w/ Alec Baldwin (to study interviewing)
Soul Food
- “You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with” – Jim Rohn
- We can be so tough on ourselves in our own heads
- compare down and we are responsible for our own happiness
- Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% of how we respond to life situations
- Quickest way to feel better: Go help someone else
- A smile goes a long way. Positive people stand out.
Most gratifying moment mentoring someone
- A listener named Karen who has a debilitating nerve disorder
7 Essential books that helped transform his life (must be read in this order):
- Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki
- The Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki & Sharon Lechter
- The Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris
- The E-Myth re-visited by Michael Gerber
- Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath
- Crush it by Gary Vaynerchuk
- Zag by Marty Neumeier
